The Patrol Division is responsible for providing high visibility, front-line police services to the community. Its primary function is to provide excellent service during every contact. Responsibilities range from assisting community members to responding to calls for crimes in progress. Other responsibilities include investigating criminal cases, and the prevention and detection of crime through proactive patrols and crime analysis.
Within this division resides patrol, traffic, S.W.A.T. and the reserve officers. In addition, this division is responsible for coordinating the field training officer program and training all newly hired police officers and reserve officers in the field.
The traffic unit promotes safety on our roadways and in our community by enforcing traffic related laws and educating the public about traffic safety. The team deploys on marked police motorcycles. They concentrate on proactive efforts to prevent and reduce collisions, while also promoting the smooth flow of traffic. Traffic officers investigate traffic collisions, and specialize in advanced techniques for processing traffic incidents involving serious injury or death. A community services officer handles parking enforcement and abandoned vehicle issues.
The Foster City S.W.A.T. team is part of a elite regional tactical team comprised of sworn police officers from the Brisbane, Burlingame, Hillsborough, San Mateo, San Bruno and South San Francisco police departments. This regional team also consists of H.N.T. (Hostage Negotiation Team) members, tactical dispatchers, tactical fire/paramedics, and a tactical doctor. This entire unit is available for activation 24 hours a day, and can provide assistance to any law enforcement agency within San Mateo County.
