Police Officer Training Fire Department Training
A Police Academy is approximately 900 hours long and consists of over 40 separate learning domains, including:
- Criminal Law
- Laws of Arrest
- Search & Seizure
- Report Writing
- Vehicle Operations
- Defensive Tactics
- First Aid & CPR
- Firearms
After the Police Academy, a recruit officer must complete approximately 600 hours of Field Training Program, riding with a seasoned and certified field training officer (FTO).
Training continues for officers throughout their careers. California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) mandates that officers receive continuous professional training and regular updating in perishable skills.
Fire Department Training
In 2014, Fire Department Suppression Personnel received 4,623 hours of training, which is an average of approximately 165hours per employee. Topics included:
- Medical Response (Emergency Medical Services, Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support)
- Drills (Single Company, Multi-Company and Multi-Agency)
- Special Operations and Technical Disciplines
- Required Continuing Education
