Your Man Around Town! - May 25, 2016

Graduating with Class. On May 15th, my youngest son, Marcus, graduated college from San Diego State University. My family spent the weekend in San Diego and witnessed first-hand his name being called, then walking across the stage to shake hands with the Dean and having a photo taken of him holding his diploma. A very proud moment indeed. Thank goodness for Facebook – so my family and friends not with us could witness the event as it unfolded.
I wonder what this year’s grautates feel about our world. Do they feel they can find a job in their chosen field of study? Can they find a place to live that they can call their own? Can they contribute to society in a meaningful way?
The answers are not simple. As parents, guardians and grandparents, we hope to provide a strong foundation for these kids. So often it is easy to just let them figure it out on their own – “tough love” they call it. However, it’s more about how we treat our world that leaves a mark upon them. I applaud each of this year’s graduates for their hard work in college and wish them all the luck and success that comes their way!
Planning Commission. At the last Council Meeting, we had the task of appointing two Members to a four-year term on the Planning Commission. For the first time ever, eight people submitted applications for consideration. Two of them were incumbents. My colleagues and I, along with staff, worked diligently to ensure we selected two qualified individuals. The approach we took was to ask the SAME five questions of each candidate. These questions were developed by the City Council to assist us in the process of determining who was best qualified to serve our community as a Planning Commissioner. I want to thank all who came forward to apply, and offer my sincere congratulations to Paul Williams and Dan Dyckman for being re-appointed.
School’s Out for Summer. As we near the end of the school year, please take care while driving to keep an eye on our future graduates. They could be walking around town, riding a bike or playing in the parks. What we do today has impact on what they have tomorrow!
