Summer Days

March 20, 2019

Councils past, present, and future have and will consider what our community needs and desires.  Simply stated, what can we add to our offerings to our City and its residents that will enhance their quality of life and sense of community?  Various nonprofit sports groups, service clubs, and nonprofit activity groups like Boy and Girl Scouts undertake many of these offerings.  The City works with these groups to provide them opportunities and venues to enhance our community’s quality of life.

In my other avocation, I participate in many festivals across the Peninsula and have watched them grow exponentially.  They offer something for everyone.  They provide a diverse set of activities, crafts, food, and entertainment for every age group and strata of their community.  We can too and we can do better. Music, Food, Beverages, Rides and Community are the stuff of great Cities and Great events.

This year we are finally rolling out a citywide celebration of community and our families.  We are inviting all our service groups, sporting organizations, and cultural groups to join us in celebration for our annual city birthday celebration.  This event will welcome back old friends and create new relationships with various segments of our society, which may have fallen through the cracks.  It will be bigger, better, and more inclusive of any event prior.  Join us as we pull out all the stops and welcome everyone to participate.

In May of 2018, it was decided by the City Council that the City would host an annual “City Birthday Party.” This event was to have a local/community focus with a citywide celebratory appeal. The overarching goal is to attract a diverse demographic cross-section of our community and bring together people of all ages and backgrounds. In addition, all proceeds from this event would be returned to the community to help fund future community events.

The inaugural City event is called “Summer Days” and will take place this year starting at 5:00 PM on August 23 through August 25, 2019.

“Summer Days” will include live entertainment (such as headliner band Tainted Love and art demonstrations), traditional carnival/amusement rides & games, on-site food trucks (provided by Moveable Feast), craft beer tastings, art/craft exhibits (by local artists and SF Etsy), in addition to activities and information booths by our local community groups.

Staff is strategically developing the Summer Days event to bring a large draw ranging from people that have lived in Foster City since incorporation to people that may not have ever been to Foster City.  The appeal of combining food trucks and craft beer, world known Etsy for high quality crafts, and Tainted Love’s following are sure to have a far reach. Local favorites including carnival rides and games and opportunities for community organizations to actively participate in the event whether through an informational booth, volunteering, or entertainment will provide for the classic community birthday celebration.  Parks and Recreation staff has embraced the opportunity to deliver an event that reflects the community’s interests which we have heard over the years at our own special events, including having a well-known band perform at the Amphitheater.

An event for the City, created by City staff will be the ultimate birthday celebration and wrap up to a fun-filled summer of Parks and Recreation programs.

Stay-tuned as more details regarding the City Birthday event, otherwise known as “Summer Days,” will be made available in the next upcoming weeks. This will include a schedule of events, full listing of participating vendors, as well as opportunities for sponsorship.
