Have a Great Summer
June 19, 2019
Summer is here! Several fun events and activities are planned that offer great opportunities for us to enjoy our beautiful city and have the community feel that we all love so much. With Parks & Recreation Month just around the corner, July kicks off a fun-filled summer of festivities.
Like past years, we will have the Fourth of July Celebration. Since 1978, the City has hosted a Fourth of July Celebration, with fireworks later being incorporated in 1982. The Fourth of July Celebration has grown to be a well-respected special event, not only highly attended by Foster City residents but visitors from neighboring Peninsula communities and beyond. This year’s celebration will continue that tradition with an all-day event beginning at 9:00 AM with a Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Rotary Club, followed by a Barbeque Lunch at 11:00 AM hosted by the Lions Club. Entertainment throughout the day will include a Family and Dog Parade, live music, and games (to name a few). And of course, the grand headliner of them all, the fireworks show at 9:30 PM! Gather your family & friends, and join us for a spectacular celebration. For further details, visit www.fostercity.org/july4.
The fun continues the following week as the Summer Concert Series begin on July 12. Every Friday night for six weeks, there will be a concert from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Leo J. Ryan Park Amphitheater. As one of the City’s signature summer events, the Summer Concert Series features a different band/genre each evening, alongside dancing and the scenic backdrop of the City we know and love. For a full line-up, visit www.fostercity.org/concerts.
Next up, Foster City will be hosting its inaugural community event “Summer Days” from August 23-25, 2019. This multi-day festival will incorporate the elements of a traditional community carnival, with on-site food trucks, craft beer tastings, and art/craft exhibits. The City has partnered with Moveable Feast, SF Etsy, and many local Foster City businesses and organizations to host a jam-packed weekend full of fun activities for folks of all ages. There are also a variety of opportunities to participate – whether as a vendor or sponsor. Visit www.fcsummerdays.com for more information and join us for this new and exciting occasion.
A lot of planning and effort goes behind these events, not only by the City, but a great number of our local partners. Whether you are spending it with family or socializing with friends, we hope you are able to enjoy these offerings.
And that’s only a small slice of all the great work made possible by the dedication, perseverance and the focus of the staff and the Council. We are already in the middle of the calendar year. In February, the Council confirmed its mission and goals and established seven priority areas to devote its attention and resources for the next two fiscal years. In April, the Council adopted a comprehensive implementation plan built around providing quality services, developing quality places, and fostering a quality community.
The work has already begun in the implementation of these areas. For example, the Levee Project permit applications are in progress with anticipated permit approval by all agencies by end of October 2019. Based on this schedule, it is anticipated that the Levee Citizen Oversight Committee will be formed in Spring 2020, the Facility Master Plan is currently in progress, and the new Recreation Center Design discussion will occur in August 2019. The funding options will be presented to the City Council for policy direction moving forward.
I would encourage those interested in learning how we bring plan into action to read more at www.fostercity.org/focusareas. I look forward to seeing incremental progress in each of these critical areas over the next two years. I will share any major updates as they come along.
