| DEFINITION: |
| Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled landscape maintenance, construction and inspection tasks in parks, playfields, cul-de-sacs, levee pathways, and public easements; operates tools, equipment, and vehicles; performs heavy physical labor; leads and participates in the work of a crew; and performs other duties as assigned. |
| DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS: |
| This class is the advanced working level classification in the class series. It is distinguished from Parks Maintenance Worker II in that it is expected to perform more advanced skill or specialized knowledge of techniques and tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and landscape facilities, systems, and infrastructure. Incumbents work independently or as a member of a crew but duties are performed without direct or continuous supervision. The Lead Maintenance Worker is also assigned to lead a crew of Maintenance Workers, including making work assignments, training assigned crew members, reviewing work in progress and work completed, and providing input to employee evaluations. |
| SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED: |
| Incumbents assigned to this classification will receive direct supervision and work assignments from a Parks Maintenance Superintendent. Incumbents assigned to this classification will direct the work activities of assigned personnel. |
| IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES: |

Performs assigned lead/supervisory duties, including receiving work schedules and assignments from the Parks Maintenance Superintendent; planning and scheduling the daily work of a maintenance crew as necessary; training, assigning, and monitoring the work of crew members to ensure work is performed according to standards and guidelines; and providing input regarding employee performance. Receives and organizes work tasks to be undertaken, including determining and securing necessary tools and equipment, crew members, and type and quantity of materials required; coordinating work as necessary with other personnel and/or contractors. Observes the performance of crew members; provides input into the formal employee performance evaluation process; informs Superintendent of performance observations on an ongoing basis; recommends individual employee performance improvements; makes recommendations to Superintendent regarding specified routine personnel actions including employee requests for time off, employee special assignments, and employee participation in training activities. Within established guidelines, purchases supplies, materials, tools, and equipment; makes recommendations regarding the type and operating specifications of equipment being considered for purchase; assists in the evaluation of prospective equipment; makes recommendations to Superintendent regarding supplies and equipment, to include in division operating budget. Keeps a variety of records associated with areas of assignments, including daily work activities performed by dates, times and quantity; completes forms related to the work; provides reports of work status, inspections, jobsite incidents, and employee performance. Investigates customer complaints; seeks to determine their nature/cause and resolve within limits of authority or reports to Superintendent for resolution. As requested, provides Engineering Division personnel or contractors technical information regarding park and landscape maintenance; participates in the inspection of completed park construction or repair projects. Operates hand and power tools, light and heavy construction equipment, and specialized equipment; evaluates and provides input into the purchase of tools and equipment; trains crew members in the proper and safe operation of tools and equipment. Performs maintenance tasks assigned to a Parks Maintenance Worker II. |
| OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES: |
| Must lift moderate to heavy objects, materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 90 pounds; considerable time standing, sitting, walking, driving, kneeling, stooping, crouching, squatting, climbing ladders, crawling, and twisting of upper body. Significant amount of time spent working outdoors and in inclimate weather; working with chemicals; occasional extreme noise or vibration; working around electrical, mechanical, and chemical hazards. May be required to operate heavy equipment. May be required to interact with customers with varying dispositions on site or when requested; may be required to utilize department or Citywide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties. Required to possess and maintain a Class “B” driver’s license issued by the State of California and job related certifications as may be required above. Must be able to work flexible and odd hours, including emergency response before and after regular work hours, weekends, and holidays. Other Requirements: Willingness and ability to work scheduled and emergency overtime; wear a uniform and appropriate safety equipment; work outdoors under adverse conditions such as at night, at heights up to 30 feet in the air, in heavy traffic, and in all weather conditions; attend workshops and classes during work and non work hours as required. |

| Knowledge of: Advanced methods, materials, terminology, and tools and equipment associated with parks and landscape facilities and systems, construction, repair, and maintenance; applicable laws, methods and practices associated with safe work practices; gardening, landscaping, and pesticide application; effective methods of lead and project supervision; effective methods of record keeping; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; applicable computer programs and equipment; business mathematics. |
| Skill in: Operating required tools, vehicles, and equipment in a safe and effective manner; creating clear concise written correspondence; operating office equipment, including computers and supporting applications; training and evaluating staff; making accurate arithmetic calculations; determining types and amounts of materials and chemicals required for the work; reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and schematics. |

| EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: |
| Education: Completion of high school or the equivalent, supplemented by training programs in parks and landscape construction and maintenance and supervision. |
| Experience: At least three years of experience equivalent to that of a Parks Maintenance Worker II with the City of Foster City Parks and Recreation Department. |
| SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: |
| Duties require the mental and/or physical ability to read fine print on labels and in manuals, maps, diagrams and blueprints; converse on the telephone, 2-way radio, and in person over the noise of machinery and traffic; detect subtle noises such as in machinery and running water; work on and around ladders and aerial lift; safely manipulate tools and equipment. |
| LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION: |
| Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class "B" Driver's License with appropriate endorsements; meet requirements, maintain license and a good driving record. |
| Certificates: Qualified Applicator Certificate, Pest Control Advisor certification, Backflow Prevention License, Certified Arborist, or National Certified Playground Inspector certification is preferred. |
