DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, to perform journeyman-level work in repairing, overhauling, and maintaining diesel and gasoline powered equipment; and to do related work as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS:
This is a non-exempt, journey-level technical classification requiring technical skills related to vehicle maintenance. This position is distinguished from Equipment Maintenance Worker in that this position performs major repairs and overhauls of major equipment such as vehicles and large maintenance equipment. This position receives direct supervision from the Chief Mechanic.
 
IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Repairs, adjusts and overhauls a wide variety of diesel or gasoline engines in equipment such as firefighting apparatus, trucks, tractors, graders, rollers, backhoes, loaders, automobiles, and other standard and specialized equipment; inspects, repairs, replaces, and modifies components of engines including drive lines, transmission, brake systems, clutches and steering assemblies; repairs or replaces ignition parts, diesel injectors and carburetor; repairs or replaces faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, emission systems, exhaust systems, generators, distributors, lights and switches; performs routine servicing, lubricating, and greasing; performs electronic diagnostics; troubleshoots electrical systems, repair and replacing faulty components including wiring; uses computerized systems to maintain chip key controller system; utilizes department or City-wide software applications to maintain records or perform various job-related duties; identifies, recommends, and on occasion authorizes purchases of parts, supplies and equipment from vendors; uses welding equipment to fabricate, rebuild, and strengthen various equipment parts; paints body and chassis units; maintains records of time and materials used on each job, the condition of equipment and repairs performed.
 
JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
Knowledge of:  Principles of gasoline and diesel engine mechanics as applies to the maintenance and repair of the automotive, fire, construction and maintenance equipment; tools and equipment of the trade; preventative maintenance inspection methods.
 
Ability to:  Inspect and analyze defects in automotive and pumping equipment and perform major and minor repairs on City-owned mechanical equipment; use a variety of tools and equipment with skill; estimate the cost and time of repairs; keep work records; work cooperatively with others; follow oral and written instructions.
 
EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:
 
Education:  Graduation from high school or equivalent.
 
Experience:  One year full-time paid journeyman-level experience within the past ten (10) years in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline power-driven equipment.
 
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION:
 
Licenses:  Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License upon appointment. Must obtain and maintain a valid California "B" Driver's License with appropriate endorsements within six months of appointment; meet requirements, maintain license and a good driving record.
 
Certificates:  ASE Certification in air conditioning, brakes and electrical systems is desirable, but not required.
