| DEFINITION: |
| Under supervision performs semi-skilled work in servicing automotive and other equipment and assists in more complex repair and maintenance work and performs related work as required. |
| DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS, FEATURES, REQUIREMENTS: |
| This is a non-exempt maintenance position that performs general repair work of less than journeyman level. This position differs from Mechanic I in that it does not typically perform journeyman level repairs and maintenance on larger equipment and vehicles. This position receives direct supervision from the Supervising Mechanic. |
| IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES: |
| The duties and responsibilities listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of the classification. Clean, wash and service motorized equipment; conduct preventative maintenance checks on a wide variety of City-owned equipment, maintains riding lawn mowers, power lawn mowers, edgers, blowers, weeding machines, chainsaws, generators, power tamper, roller and stripping machines, and other power equipment from Parks or Public Works Departments. Grease and lubricate automobiles, trucks and heavy automotive equipment; service batteries and other parts. Perform comprehensive safety inspections on vehicles and equipment. Perform routine repair work and report safety and other repair needs to Equipment Operations Leader. Change and repair tires; install and service batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other simple mechanical parts. Service automotive equipment with proper lubricants; keep records of amounts used. Perform service calls; make temporary repairs, pickup and deliver vehicles to outside garages, pick up parts and road test vehicles to ensure proper operation. Clean vehicles and equipment; maintain shop cleanliness. Assist with new vehicle set-up and processing; assist with preparing vehicles for surplus. Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required; performs general repair work of less or equal to that of journeyman level Attend training pertaining to the repair and up-keep of City-owned equipment; attends weekly meeting with Vehicle Maintenance Division personnel to discuss relevant issues. Perform related duties as assigned. |

| Physical Characteristics: Must be able to lift heavy objects. Perform manual labor and be in sufficiently good health to perform job duties. Position requires the ability to discern color. |

| Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: |
| Knowledge of: Tools and equipment associated with the work; mechanical and electrical systems of automotive and motorized equipment; lubricating systems and oils, greases and attachments used in lubricating automotive and motorized equipment; basic components of automotive equipment; required methods of preventative maintenance and inspection of vehicles and equipment; methods occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the work; tools, equipment and procedures used in the proper servicing of automotive and other mechanical equipment. |
| Ability to: Perform routine service and repair to automotive and motorized equipment; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; perform routine computer data entry on daily work performed, and use computer to retrieve records regarding previous repairs; perform heavy manual labor. |
| EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be: |
| Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by coursework or specialized training in automotive mechanic or a related field. |
| Experience: Two years full-time, paid experience in mechanical maintenance, including one year of experience working with diesel and gasoline powered equipment. |
| LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATION: |
| Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class "C" Driver's License upon appointment. Must obtain and maintain a valid California "B" Driver's License with appropriate endorsements within six months of appointment; continually meet requirements to maintain license and a good driving record. |
