Community Members Encouraged to Sign Up for Emergency Alerts Through SMCAlert

With the recent wildfires occurring in the North Bay, it is an opportune time to encourage all San Mateo County residents, especially those in Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo, to become subscribers of the SMCAlert notification system.

SMCAlert is an alert notification system used to immediately contact community members during urgent or emergency situations. Subscribers may select among multiple options for receiving emergency and non-emergency text and voice messages including email accounts, cell phones, smartphones, tablets, and voice messages to landline phones.

SMCAlert is free, though wireless carriers may charge a fee for alerts sent to wireless devices. SMCAlert is available in all cities and towns in San Mateo County. There are two ways to sign up for the service:

For nearly a decade, San Mateo County, its cities and its public safety agencies have used SMCAlert to keep residents and visitors safe and avoid hazards from natural disasters to significant traffic events. Nearly 60,000 people are currently enrolled in SMCAlert, and over 500 emergency messages have been sent within the last 12 months.
