Portions of the Levee Bay Trail will be closed temporarily on Thursday, April 10, while crews perform maintenance work at each of the three floodgates installed as part of the Levee Improvements Project.

There are three floodgates along the Levee pedway that can close during storm surges or high tides to prevent flooding within the limits of the levee. Floodgate 1 is adjacent to the San Mateo Bridge; floodgate 2 is at the eastern Bay Trail connection to Belmont, south of Baffin Street; floodgate 3 is at the western Bay Trail connection to Belmont, south of Rock Harbor Lane. Annual maintenance of these floodgates is required to ensure functionality, maximize service life, and identify potential problems to enable timely repairs.

Maintenance for the floodgates will take place on Thursday, April 10, starting at 7 am at floodgate 1, followed by floodgates 2 and 3. Only one floodgate will be worked on at a time, and the work is estimated to take two to three hours at each location. Pedestrian and bicyclist access through the area will be closed during the work, but restored immediately afterward. While work is underway, bikers and pedestrians along the Levee Bay Trail are asked to follow the detour routes which will be posted near each floodgate location.

The City appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation for any inconvenience caused by maintenance activities. Please contact the Public Works Department at (650) 286-3270 with any questions or comments.
