Join the Wyland Foundation’s 2023 National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation

At the March 20 meeting, the City Council formally expressed support via resolution for the City of Foster City’s participation in the Wyland Foundation’s 2023 National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, which takes place starting April 1 through April 30.

To participate, residents visit https://www.mywaterpledge.com/, and then make a series of online pledges to conserve water on behalf of the City of Foster City. Cities with the highest percentage of residents who take the challenge in their population category (30,000-99,999 population category) have an opportunity to win $3,000 toward their home utility bills, and hundreds of eco-friendly prizes, including: water saving fixtures such as Toro Irrigation Smart Controllers, gift cards for Hobie Surf Shops, and more.

Students and teachers are encouraged to participate as well. One school from each winning city will receive 100 pairs of Zenni Remakes eyeglasses that help reduce damage to eyes from prolonged exposure to blue light. Each pair is made from recycled plastics equivalent to three discarded single-use plastic water bottles.

The Wyland Foundation’s 2023 National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation is the twelfth annual nationwide community service campaign. Last year, Foster City residents who made the pledge and participated in the challenge contributed to significant potential savings in water, electricity, and consumer costs, in addition to a reduction of hazardous waste from entering watersheds and landfills, single-use plastic water bottles, and carbon dioxide emissions.

Foster City Mayor Jon Froomin is joining mayors across the country who are asking residents to make a long-term commitment to reduce pollution and manage water resources more wisely.

In support of the water conservation challenge, Mayor Froomin said, “Consistent with the City of Foster City’s vision and mission, participation in the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation aligns with the City’s key strategic priority areas, including innovation and sustainability and facilities and infrastructure. As a community leader committed to efficient use of natural resources, I support the mission of the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, a non-profit national community service program, and in so doing affirm my commitment to sustainability for my City and for future generations.”
