The City of Foster City, in collaboration with RethinkWaste, and Recology San Mateo County, have announced that their very popular compost give-aways, previously scheduled to take place in September and October, have been cancelled due to the need to maintain social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Foster City residents are reminded that they can pick up free compost year-round at Shoreway Environmental Center, located at 333 Shoreway Road in San Carlos.  Simply go to the scale house (accessible via Gate 1) and show proof of residency.  Residents will be provided with up to two empty paper bags (approx. 3 cubic feet), which can be filled with the free compost. Residents need to be prepared to fill and load the bags themselves. More information can be found here: www.rethinkwaste.org/compost.

Close the organics recycling loop by using this compost, which is created from the yard trimmings and organic materials that are collected through your green compost carts and bins and composted at a local composting facility. Yard trimmings make up more than half of California’s municipal waste. Compost is the valuable, nutrient-rich soil product that results from the controlled decomposition of organic material. Compost is ideally used as an amendment to enrich soil for lawns, gardens, ornamental plants, trees, and potted plants.

You can make your own compost! Free home composting workshops are offered by San Mateo County.  Learn more here: www.smcsustainability.org/waste-reduction/composting.
