At the August 20, 2018 City Council Meeting, the City Council adopted an ordinance to amend the Foster City Municipal Code Chapter 8.05, Regulation of Smoking.
The Regulation of Smoking Ordinance, first adopted in 2014, defined areas within the City where smoking is prohibited, established posting requirements for no smoking signs, established enforcement mechanisms, created a right to bring a private civil enforcement action, and established a public education component for citizens, owners, and operators affected by the Ordinance.
In an effort to further increase the safety, welfare, and health of Foster City residents, the City Council amended the Ordinance on August 20, 2018 by extending the smoking ban to all areas of shopping centers, restaurants, streets, and sidewalks in the City. View the adopted ordinance here.
“I am proud to see our community join the best communities in the country and control the effects of smoking and second-hand smoke in our City. Now our children are guaranteed a smoke-free environment so they can, along with their families, live and play anywhere in our City without any exposure to their cancer causing activity.” said Councilmember Herb Perez.
The amended Regulation of Smoking Ordinance will become effective on September 19, 2018. Over the next few weeks, City staff will be conducting outreach to the various shopping centers and general public.
