The City of Foster City is proudly announcing that a new employment contract has been approved with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). According to terms of the two-year memorandum of understanding with AFSCME, workers will receive an across-the-board increase to base salaries of four percent retroactive to July 1, 2021. Effective July 1, 2022, an across-the-board increase will also be applied to base salaries according to the Bay Area consumer price index with a minimum of three percent and a maximum of five percent.

As well, effective January 1, 2022, the City’s contribution toward the Flexible Benefit Plan will be increased by 12.5%, and all classic CalPERS member employees will contribute 0.5% of wages towards the Employer’s CalPERS contribution rate, effective April 1, 2022. Additionally, the contract grants workers a one-time COVID Recognition Bonus worth $2,000. In all, the deal is reflective of a $363,886 total investment from the City.

“The City Council is delighted to approve the new agreement with AFSCME. Each Councilmember believes the deal reflects the deep appreciation and respect held for all of the AFSCME members who have worked admirably and tirelessly through a uniquely challenging period in Foster City’s history,” said the City Council in a joint statement.

Interim City Manager Kevin Miller shared a similar sentiment. “The agreement with AFSCME is a true testament to the strong sense of unity and partnership shared by everyone at the City of Foster City. And we are excited over the opportunity to continue working together toward the common goal of providing the highest standard of public service to our community.”
