Foster City Congratulates Tracy Avelar on Selection as Pleasanton’s Police Chief

As she departs to take a new position as the Police Chief in Pleasanton, the City of Foster City expresses immense appreciation and gratitude to Police Chief Tracy Avelar for her many years of dedicated community service.
Chief Avelar has served in the Foster City Police Department for 22 years and was selected as the department’s first ever female Police Chief in 2019. She also served as Foster City’s acting City Manager in 2021. Chief Avelar’s leadership was not contained to Foster City. She also served as the President of the San Mateo County Police and Sheriffs Association and is currently the President of the California Police Chiefs Association.
“I am deeply thankful to Chief Avelar for her many years of commitment, leadership and service to the Foster City community,” said City Manager Stefan Chatwin. “Under her guidance and direction, the Foster City Police Department continues to set the standard for integrity, professionalism, and community service in law enforcement. We appreciate the more than two decades she dedicated to Foster City, and we wish her all the best in her next chapter.”
Over the last five years, Chief Avelar has brought calm through the chaos of some of the most challenging years in policing history. Her focus toward innovation, wellness, and community engagement has placed the department in great shape for the next Chief.
“I am incredibly humbled to be taking on this new role. My career started here in Foster City and I will definitely leave part of my heart behind. I know the people that make up the Foster City Police Department are the best and have the biggest hearts. Their professionalism and talent never cease to amaze me. I have no doubt this agency will continue to thrive and serve this community excellently.”
