On September 3, 2019, at 6:21 p.m., Foster City Police Department Officers responded to 879 Shell Boulevard, the Sand Cove Apartments, on a call of an in progress residential burglary at one of the apartments within the complex. The victim reported he arrived home and located a man inside his apartment without authorization and unknown to the victim. The victim also indicated that upon arriving home, he discovered his front door appeared to have been forced open and was ajar. When he entered, he saw the suspect inside rummaging through his belongings. The suspect told the victim to leave, which the victim willingly did. The resident then immediately called 911 to report the break-in and he provided a detailed description of the suspect.

FCPD officers responded directly to the apartment and located the suspect still inside. The officers positioned themselves outside the apartment and ordered the suspect to come out. When the suspect exited, officers saw he matched the description provided by the victim and the officers detained him without incident. The investigating officers discovered the suspect had several pieces of the victim’s property in his possession, including a knife that he was carrying in a concealed manner in his waistband. The investigation further revealed the suspect forcefully broke into the apartment and stole several items belonging to the victim. FCPD officers subsequently arrested the suspect for felony residential burglary and for illegally carrying a dagger. In the process of confirming the identity of the suspect, it was discovered he had two outstanding arrest warrants issued by the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office: one warrant was for committing battery on a person and a second warrant was for exhibiting a weapon in a threatening manner and illegally carrying a dirk or dagger.

Booked into the San Mateo County Jail and charged with felony residential burglary and illegally carrying a concealed dirk or dagger was 30-year old San Francisco resident, Brent Allen McDonald. McDonald was also booked for the outstanding warrants.

Residential burglaries have increased throughout the Peninsula region. While Foster City has not experienced the amount of residential burglaries that other cities have experienced, our City is not completely unaffected by this type of crime. To deter would be burglars, there are actions and security measures that can be taken to deter criminals.

The FCPD would like to ask residents to call the police if they notice activity in their neighborhood that appears out of the ordinary or suspicious in nature. If you arrive home and find something suspicious, such as an entry door ajar or forced open, or a broken window, move to a safe location and call 911. The FCPD will respond to these types of incidents to determine if criminal activity is occurring or not. The FCPD would also like to remind residents to secure their residences by ensuring all doors and windows are locked before leaving the house. Having a security system can help to deter would be burglars. For more information about securing your residence, please call the FCPD’s Crime Prevention Community Outreach Officer at 650-286-3300 for a home security survey.
