At the March 8th, 2018 City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG) Board of Directors meeting, the C/CAG Board of Directors appointed Councilmember Herb Perez to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC).
Following an announcement regarding the recruitment of an elected member to fill a seat vacancy on BPAC, Councilmember Perez submitted his letter of interest for consideration. Since 2015, Councilmember Perez has served as the representative for the City of Foster City on the C/CAG Board of Directors, which proved integral as he recognizes the complexities of issues facing not only Foster City, but the entire San Mateo County. Among his other commitments, Councilmember Perez also serves as the representative on a number of other local and regional agencies/committees; including the Foster City Youth Advisory Committee and C/CAG Airport Land Use Committee.
“The City needed a strong and responsible voice on this Committee. It is my honor to have been elected by this great group of regional leaders,” said Councilmember Perez.
BPAC is a 15-member committee, comprised of both public and elected members. The role of BPAC is to review all matters relating to bicycle and pedestrian facilities planning and on the selection of projects for state and federal funding; including roadway, pedestrian, and bicycle improvements. BPAC provides advice and recommendations to the C/CAG Board of Directors on items related thereof, helping prioritize projects for funding through the Transportation Development Act Article 3 grant program and the One Bay Area grant program. With Councilmember Perez’s appointment to BPAC, the Foster City jurisdiction will be represented by both himself and Vice Mayor Gary Pollard.
Originally established in the 1990s as the C/CAG Bicycle Advisory Committee, the committee was later renamed in the early 2000s as the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee – reflecting a broadened interest in walking and other active modes of transportation. BPAC has been instrumental in developing the 2010 Bicycle Transportation Map, which was later updated and reprinted in 2015. The Committee was also centrally involved in the development of the Countywide Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan adopted in September 2011.
BPAC meets on the fourth Thursday of the month from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at San Mateo City Hall. Members of the public are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
