For Immediate Release: March 11, 2020
Contact: Jeff C. Moneda, City Manager, (650) 286-3220, jmoneda@fostercity.org

The City of Foster City is working closely with the County of San Mateo, as well as neighboring jurisdictions, to monitor and respond to the evolving novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and its potential impacts. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and San Mateo County Health remain the best resources for current information about the COVID 19, and information is available at www.cdc.gov or https://smchealth.org/coronavirus. At this time, the CDC believes that the public’s risk of exposure is relatively low.

Based on recommendations by the San Mateo County Health Officer, the City of Foster City will be cancelling any (or several) non-essential events and large gatherings. Additionally, the City has received direct requests from event organizers regarding their events and will be working with them to make adjustments as necessary. The meetings and events that have been cancelled to-date include the following:

Cancelled Meetings/Events:

  • 03/12/2020 – Audit Committee Special Meeting
  • 03/19/2020 – Parks & Recreation Committee Special Meeting
  • 03/22/2020 – City Council Special Meeting (City Council Vision & Policy Summit)
  • 03/24/2020 – Playground Replacement Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
  • 03/26/2020 – Traffic Review Committee Regular Meeting
  • 03/28/2020 – Holi: Festival of Colors

If you are a group or individual with a meeting or event scheduled at a City facility, please contact the City’s Parks & Recreation Department at (650) 286-3380 if you would like to consider any changes to your reservation.

All City facilities, including City Hall, will remain open for normal operation from Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. City services will remain uninterrupted and essential public meetings – including City Council and Planning Commission meetings – will continue as normal. Members of the public may stream the meetings live online at https://www.fostercity.org/fctv or on FCTV on Comcast Channel 27 and AT&T Channel 99. The meetings will also be replayed the following day at 1:00 PM and the following Saturday at 5:00 PM as normally scheduled.

To practice the necessary precautions, the City will also implement social distancing measures at any upcoming meetings. Other preventative measures have been implemented for City employees, including the restriction of non-essential travel for employees.

The City recognizes the County Health Officer’s recommendations could change over time, and are currently working with staff on a variety of contingencies should program cancellations or facility closures become necessary in the future. The community’s health and well-being remain of utmost priority and the City will continue to provide updates as they become available.

Preventive Measures:

To prevent the spread of all infectious diseases, including common illnesses like colds and flu, it is highly encouraged that everyone take common-sense precautions. These basic actions could help slow the spread of COVID-19, not only protecting yourself, but others. For preventative tips, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/prevention.html.

How to Find Reliable Information:

Residents should rely on official channels for accurate news and information about COVID-19, as well as recommendations for efforts to contain its spread. Residents should check directly with their local school district for information about schools.

Residents with non-medical questions can call 2-1-1 for information about the coronavirus locally. 2-1-1 is a confidential service accessible 24/7 in 180 languages. Callers can get answers to questions about how residents, schools and businesses should prepare for COVID-19, as well as ways to prevent the spread of the virus. The 2-1-1 information service also offers a text option. Text “coronavirus” to “211211” to receive useful information from the CDC. After receiving a return text message, residents can enter a ZIP code for county-specific health-related links.

Please do not call 9-1-1 for information about the COVID-19.
