“BE AWARE AND SHARE” -- City Offers Open Water Swim Safety Equipment
For Immediate Release: August 3, 2020
Contact: ‘Andra Lorenz, Acting Principal Management Analyst, alorenz@fostercity.org
If you swim in open water, you may not know just how hard it is for boaters to see you. Since the lagoon is a shared use area, with boater and swimmers both enjoying this ultimate recreational venue, the City of Foster City wants to make sure that swimmers stay safe while swimming in the lagoon.
Swim buoys are now available for no-cost loan at the Leo Ryan Park Boathouse daily from 11 AM to 7 PM during summer months. Thank you to California Windsurfing for managing the program for our swim community.
Swimmers in the lagoon are encouraged to use all means to ensure that they are visible to boaters. Swim buoys are one method of increasing visibility.
Foster City’s lagoon has long been an ultimate recreational venue for both swimmers and all types of watercraft –sailboats, electric boats, kayaks, peddleboats, paddleboards and windsurf. Since the Shelter-in-Place order went into effect in March 2020, the City has observed an upswing in activity on the lagoon and has heard of some “near misses” between boats and swimmers. Since the lagoon is a shared use area, with boating, swimming and fishing, the City of Foster City wants to make sure that all users stay safe.
