Wild Birds in Foster City

Many of the features that make Foster City attractive to humans also make it attractive to migratory water fowl.  Lush green parks provide ample food and the City's beautiful waterways provide safety and protection from land predators.

Many Foster City residents and property owners care about Foster City's local wildlife.  But sometimes, wild birds create situations that are unpleasant and unsettling.  When that happens, we occasionally get questions about the control of wild birds.

Crows have become very common in Foster City.  Crows are members of the Corvidae family that are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty.  Foster City does not have a "crow abatement " program but does encourage the practices recommended by the Humane Society of the US to discourage crows from hanging around individual properties and neighborhoods.  These practices have been helpful for some citizens and we also implement these suggestions in our parks system and around city facilities.

Ducks, geese and coots raise people's interest, especially when residents attract quantities of these birds by feeding them.  Please remember that all non-domestic birds are wild animals for whom human food like bread, popcorn, or lunch scraps is not healthy.
