Want to make a positive impact in Foster City? Serving on a committee or commission is a great way for you to participate in local government and serve your community. The City of Foster City is currently accepting applications for the Board of Appeals to fill five vacancies on this new Board that will consider and decide appeals from decisions of the City’s Building Official. Term information is as follows:
- Three vacancies for full terms: Four-year terms, starting January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2029.
- Two vacancies for partial terms: Two-year terms, starting January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027.
Meetings will be held as needed, therefore there is not an established meeting calendar. The Board of Appeals is comprised of five members who must be experienced in the building construction industry. Applicants do not need to be Foster City residents for consideration.
The Board of Appeals is designed to provide for a final determination for the suitability of alternate materials, methods of construction, and reasonable codes interpretations in the event of an appeal from the determination of the Building Official. The Board shall adopt reasonable rules and regulations for conducting its investigations and shall consider all evidence or proof submitted and conduct, or cause to be conducted, any investigations or tests it deems necessary in order to render a final decision on the matter. The Board may also recommend to the City Council such new legislation relating to the City’s Building Codes. Members of the Board of Appeals and meetings of the Board of Appeals are subject to the Brown Act public meeting requirements. Members of the Board of Appeals shall be required to file Form 700s to report disclosures in accordance with the City’s Conflict of Interest Code.
Those interested are invited to submit applications by Thursday, September 12, at 5:00 p.m. Applicants are required to attend the City Council meeting on Monday, October 7 for consideration of an official appointment.
