A suspect was shot during the service of a felony search and arrest warrant by an officer from the Foster City Police Department. The suspect was transported for a gunshot injury. An officer was stabbed by the suspect, but his protective gear prevented injury. The San Mateo County Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was initiated, and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is investigating. This is preliminary information - more information will be provided in a later, detailed release.

Foster City PD attempted service of a search and arrest warrant on an ongoing felony investigation at 6:00 pm on January 22, 2020 at the Eaves apartment complex. The suspect is a 38 year old male Foster City Resident, and the investigation involved allegations of felony sex offenses. Foster City Officers made the required knock and notice at the location, and entered the premises with multiple force options available to make the arrest. The officers made contact with the suspect, who was armed with a knife in the bathroom. The suspect stabbed one of the officers, and the officer’s protective gear prevented injury. Officers used multiple force options, including taser and firearm. The suspect received a single gunshot wound and was transported to the nearest trauma center. The suspect’s injuries are non-life threatening.

All agencies in San Mateo County follow a specific protocol for any officer involved critical incident. This involves three independent investigations that will take place.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office conducts an independent investigation into the legality of the officer’s actions.

The agency of jurisdiction - in this case Foster City Police Department - investigates the criminal actions of the suspect during the incident.

The agency of the involved officer - also FCPD - conducts an independent administrative investigation of their officer’s actions as they relate to department policy.
