The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for extreme temperatures exceeding 90 degrees across the region from Thursday, September 1, through Tuesday, September 6. During this time, there is an elevated risk of potential heat-related illness, especially for seniors, children, those with pre-existing health conditions, and pets.

Residents are advised to monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, remain in an air-conditioned room, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during the daytime, and check on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in cars during hot weather, as temperatures can reach lethal levels in a matter of moments.

The Foster City Recreation Center, located at 650 Shell Boulevard, will be open during regular business hours throughout the weekend for community members in need of a safe, air-conditioned space. The Recreation Center is expected to be closed on Monday, September 5, in observance of Labor Day, but availability may be adjusted as needed with changing conditions. Additionally, those in need of relief from the heat may also visit local libraries or other cooling centers throughout San Mateo County.

If you or someone you know is exhibiting signs of heat stroke or a health condition brought on by the hot weather, call 9-1-1. Symptoms can include extremely high body temperature exceeding 103 degrees; difficulty breathing; red, hot, dry skin (with no sweating); rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea; and more.

Stay prepared and sign up to receive instant emergency notifications via email, text message or phone call by registering for SMC Alert at https://www.smcgov.org/ceo/smc-alert. Also, try to limit the strain on the power grid by reducing energy use during peak hours from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more information about the Foster City Recreation Center’s operating hours, call (650) 286-3380.
