For Immediate Release: July 31, 2019
Contact: Captain Martin Ticas, F.C.P.D., (650) 286-3318
On 7/30/2019, a 20-year old San Mateo resident was the victim of an attempted robbery, criminal threats, and a lewd act. The victim was riding her bicycle along the pedway in the area of the 100 Block of Port Royal Avenue. The suspect rode up to the woman on a bicycle and attempted to engage her in a conversation. The suspect could not communicate with the victim because he spoke in a language she did not understand. She tried to ride away from the suspect, but he blocked her path with his bicycle. The suspect attempted to communicate with the woman a second time by using a translation app on his cell phone. The suspect showed her his phone that displayed a threatening message, so the victim started to leave. At that point, the suspect made a lewd gesture towards the victim and attempted to grab her cell phone, but did not take it. The victim ran away from the suspect and used her cell phone to call 911. The victim then provided a very accurate description of the suspect that was relayed to responding officers.
FCPD officers responded to the area and quickly located the suspect in the area of Port Royal Avenue and Jamaica Street and detained him. FCPD officers conducted their investigation and discovered the suspect had earlier used his phone to make a lewd comment to another woman in the area. Both the victim and the woman who earlier encountered the suspect positively identified the suspect as the one who committed the reported acts. FCPD officers then arrested the suspect.
Booked into the San Mateo County Jail and charged with attempted robbery, making criminal threats, false imprisonment, and soliciting for a lewd act was 19-year old, San Mateo resident, Bryan Kennis Lopez.
