With construction work successfully completed, Foster City is preparing to permanently implement the Traffic Relief Program designed to reduce cut-through traffic through the City.  The “No Left Turn” signs along East Hillsdale Boulevard at Edgewater and Shell Boulevards will be activated during the evening commute hours from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, March 21.

Construction on the Traffic Relief Program started in January 2022 and was completed ahead of schedule. The project was initiated in 2019, utilizing temporary traffic management devices and signs, to improve traffic conditions in Foster City by reducing congestion as motorists seek alternative routes to avoid the freeway gridlock on Highway 101 and State Route 92.

The program introduces new, changeable traffic signals which will activate to prohibit left turns at key intersections along E. Hillsdale Boulevard amid the hours of peak traffic demand during the week. Outside of the assigned time window, the prohibitions are lifted, the signs will be deactivated, and traffic may move freely through the area.

“We are pleased to activate the Traffic Relief Program, which will improve traffic conditions and reduce congestion at a critical time as restrictions related to the pandemic are lifted and workers return to offices,” said Public Works Director Louis Sun. “And we appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by the community while we worked to complete this critical project.”
