FAQ - Building Permits

Question: Why Should I Get a Building Permit?

Answer: The City of Foster City and the State of California requires that you obtain permits for various building projects.

Section 1.6.1 of the California Building Code requires permits for any building or structure that is erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, improved, converted or demolished.

If you are doing anything more than repainting, recarpeting or refacing your kitchen cabinets you should give the Building Inspection Division a call for information regarding submittal requirements, fees and the permit process.

If improvements are made to your house or building without the required permits, the Community Development Department may issue fines and you could have to remove the improvement. Always be sure to call the Building Inspection Division and the Planning/Code Enforcement Division prior to starting any work.
